The Origin of the Moon's 'Mascons' (IMAGE)

Free-air gravitational acceleration anomalies over the 420-km-diameter Freundlich-Sharonov impact basin are on the far side of the Moon. The color scale ranges between -300 and 300 mgal. The image is 1,000 km wide. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the May 30, 2013, issue of Science Express, published by AAAS. The paper, by H. J. Melosh at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN, and colleagues was titled, "The Origin of Lunar Mascon Basins."
