Vegetation, Moisture Control Urban Heat Islands (1 of 1) (IMAGE)
Caption
Urban surface temperature is typically higher than its rural counterpart, known as the surface urban heat island effect. This schematic highlights the debate about which strategy works better to reduce urban surface temperature: making cities rougher or making cities greener? This material relates to a paper that appeared in the April 3rd, 2019, issue of Science Advances, published by AAAS. The paper, by D. Li at Boston University in Boston, MA, and colleagues was titled, "Urban heat island: Aerodynamics or imperviousness?."
