Some Dinos' Teeth Rivaled Mammals' for Plant-Chewing (3 of 5)

This is a Hadrosaurid skeleton with dental battery and an Edmontosaurus skeleton and a lower jaw showing the unique hadrosaurid dental battery. These animals had up to 1,400 teeth in columns that were constantly erupting, wearing down, and being shed throughout life. They shed thousands of teeth per year. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the Oct. 5, 2012, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Gregory Erickson at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla., and colleagues was titled, "Complex Dental Structure and Wear Biomechanics in Hadrosaurid Dinosaurs."
