This is a temporary winter camp for the drilling operation on Lake El´gygytgyn in spring 2009. The road in the upper left connects the camp at the western shore with the drilling platform 7 km away on the ice cover in the lake center. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the June 22, 2012, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by M. Melles at University of Cologne in Cologne, Germany, and colleagues was titled, “2.8 Million Years of Arctic Climate Change from Lake El’gygytgyn, NE Russia.”
