Level of mitochondrial gene expression and interferon response in human epithelial cells in response to infection with the four Candida species.Increased expression of mitochondrial genes and interferon response was only achieved after direct contact with viable Candida cells, but not when they were inactivated or viable but unable to establish direct contact.
