The ABC protein and evolution of vertebrates (IMAGE)

The ABCA1 protein flips the cholesterol from the inner to the outer layer of the cell membrane. This strengthens the ability of the skin to protect the body from external stimuli. The researchers suggest this played an important role in the evolution of vertebrates.
