The 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake. The earthquake ruptured through the river, built up a small waterfall, and destroyed a concrete viaduet. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Feb. 27th, 2019, issue of Science Advances, published by AAAS. The paper, by C.-H. Tang at Academia Sinica in Taipei, Taiwan, and colleagues was titled, "Lower-crustal rheology and thermal gradient in the Taiwan orogenic belt illuminated by the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake."
