This photo shows the wide valley floor (~4 km) of the Nyang River, a tributary of the Yarlung Tsangpo, which can be seen in the distance on the right hand side. Here, the valley floor of the paleo-canyon lies at a depth of ~800 meters below the present-day river. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Nov. 21 2014 issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by P. Wang at China Earthquake Administration in Beijing, China, and colleagues was titled, 'Tectonic control of Yarlung Tsangpo Gorge revealed by a buried canyon in Southern Tibet.'
