These are calcite macrocrystals lining the walls of a fresh water gour in Vallgornera Cave, Spain. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Feb. 12, 2010, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Jeffrey Dorale of the University of Iowa and colleagues, was titled, "Sea-Level Highstand 81,000 Years Ago in Mallorca."
