Neural Prosthesis (IMAGE)
Caption
The research at CNEP builds on the scientists' earlier work, including a 2009 UC Berkeley study showing that the macaque monkey’s brain is capable of forming a motor memory to control a disembodied device. Signals from the brain's motor cortex were translated by a "decoder," analogous to a simplified spinal cord, into deliberate movements of a computer cursor. The task involved moving a cursor from a central starting point out to a nearby target.
