A Real-Life, Origami-Inspired Transformer (11 of 12) (IMAGE)
Caption
Jesse Silverberg et al. used origami-based engineering to design a lightweight, ultra-tough material with tunable properties. Their inspiration was a specific type of zigzag origami fold that has previously been used to efficiently pack solar panels for space missions. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the 8 August, 2014, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Jesse Silverberg at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, and colleagues was titled, 'Using origami design principles to fold reprogrammable mechanical metamaterials.'
