This shows the presence of IDO, or indoleamine dioxigenase, molecules (in green), expressed by blood vessels in kidney grafts in recipients that received a CD28-blocking drug. This is meaningful since IDO is by itself an immune system molecule generated by the interaction of T-cells with other cell types (here, smooth muscle cells). This image relates to an article that appeared in the February 3, 2010, issue of Science Translational Medicine. The study, by Dr. Poirier of INSERM in Nantes, France, and colleagues was titled, "Inducing CTLA-4-Dependent Immune Regulation by Selective CD28 Blockade Promotes Regulatory T Cells in Organ Transplantation."
