Social Bees Far and Wide Share Their Gut Bacteria (7 of 8)

Evolution of social bees and their microbiomes. Acquisition of core microbiota may have coincided with the transition to social lifestyles 80 million years ago. Closely related bees have more similar microbiomes, suggesting co-diversification of host bees and their microbes. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the March 29, 2017, issue of Science Advances, published by AAAS. The paper, by W.K. Kwong at Yale University in New Haven, Conn., and colleagues was titled, 'Dynamic microbiome evolution in social bees.'
