A research volunteer sits in a water-immersion tank designed to simulate underwater conditions. With support from the Office of Naval Research, Dr. Blair Johnson (not pictured), of the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, is conducting a new type of research that may protect Navy divers from oxygen toxicity--which results from breathing lethal levels of oxygen that occur at depth and pressure.
