Primula vulgaris from Curtis' Floral Londinensis (1777-1798) (IMAGE)
Caption
Hand colored copper plate print, engraved by Sydenham Edwards for William Curtis' Flora Londinensis published between 1777 and 1798. This image of Primula vulgaris published on March 1, 1791, shows pin stigmas in the mouths of the intact flowers. The UEA research team identified the landscape of genes which operate within the primrose's two different flowering forms that are involved in the reproductive process. This adds fresh insight to a puzzle that scientists have been grappling with for over 150 years.
