This movie illustrates the development of the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) on the Southern Ocean sea surface 1982 through 2011, in µatm. The number above the color bar illustrates the mean atmospheric partial pressure of pCO2 south of 35S. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Sept. 11, 2015 issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by P. Landschützer at ETH Zürich in Zürich, Switzerland, and colleagues was titled, "The reinvigoration of the Southern Ocean carbon sink."
