Typhoon Morakot, which struck in August 2009, was one of the most destructive storms ever to hit Taiwan, causing widespread damage and killing several hundred people. It dropped up to two meters of rain in just five days in the mountains and drastically altered the flow of water along the nearby continental shelf.
