This negative stained transmission electron micrograph (TEM) shows recreated 1918 influenza virions that were collected from supernatants of 1918-infected Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cells cultures 18 hours after infection.. This image relates to article that appeared in the Feb. 2, 2007, issue of the journal Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. T. M. Tumpey and colleagues of the National Center for Infectious Diseases, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Ga., was titled "A Two-Amino Acid Change in the Hemagglutinin of the 1918 Influenza Virus Abolishes Transmission."
