Immunostaining (IMAGE) University of Wisconsin-Madison Caption Immunohistology or Impressionism? A technique called "immunostaining" produced this image of human tissue and blood vessels from a patient by staining antibodies and proteins involved in immune response. The staining allows observations of which proteins are triggered and can inform hypotheses about the causes of disease. With this knowledge, scientists better understand disease mechanisms and develop new therapies. The resemblance to famous works by Monet and Van Gogh is striking.
