Dozens of fires marked in red are criss-crossing Brazil's landscape in this Aug. 17, 2012 natural color image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua satellite. The cause of the fires is unclear at this point. It could be the yearly brushfires set for agricultural purposes, although this is not substantiated.
