Coordinating Fruit-Fly Metamorphosis and Growth (3 of 5) (IMAGE)
Caption
This image shows the deviations from perfect symmetry in the left and right wing of an adult female fly of Drosophila melanogaster deficient in the insulin-like peptide 8. Typically the size of the wings on both sides matches precisely. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the May 4, 2012, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Andres Garelli at Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas in Alicante, Spain, and colleagues was titled, "Imaginal Discs Secrete Insulin-Like Peptide 8 to Mediate Plasticity of Growth and Maturation."
