Bruce Carlson dissects a freshly-caught mormyrid to expose the brain so that it can be immersed in fixative for preservation. Brains collected in this way were then transported back to the Carlson laboratory at Washington University in St. Louis for histological processing. This image relates to an article that appeared in the April 29, 2011, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Bruce Carlson of Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., and colleagues, was titled, "Brain Evolution Triggers Increased Diversification of Electric Fishes."
