A five-foot high scarp dramatically offsets the ground surface across fresh earthquake rupture of the Borrego fault. In addition to concentrated deformation along this sharp fault line, high-resolution differential LIDAR of the surrounding landscape reveals substantial warping of the ground extending hundreds to thousands of feet from the main fault. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the Feb. 10, 2012, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Michael E. Oskin at the University of California, Davis in Davis, Calif., and colleagues was titled, “Near-Field Deformation from the El Mayor–Cucapah Earthquake Revealed by Differential LIDAR.”
