A New Plastic Both Tough and Malleable (2 of 6) (IMAGE)
Caption
From an elastic ribbon to a complex twisted shape, the transformation made by twisting and relaxing stresses by local heating is the same as used by glass workers to achieve objects with complex shapes. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the Nov. 18, 2011, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by D. Montarnal of CNRS in Paris, France, and colleagues, was titled, “Silica-Like Malleable Materials from Permanent Organic Networks.”
