The Normal Modes of a Disordered Crystal (2 of 4) (IMAGE)
Caption
MD simulation of particle fluctuations in a crystal of soft particles. Darker color represents fewer fluctuations compared to bright colors. The result shows regions of correlated dynamical fluctuations, similar to experimental observations. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Aug. 6, 2010, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Deniz Kaya of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pa., and colleagues is titled, "Normal Modes and Density of States of Disordered Colloidal Solids."
