A Rock Ant with Microtransponder Attached (IMAGE)

A worker rock ant (Temnothorax albipennis) with a radio frequency identification microtransponder affixed to its thorax. The ants are between 2 and 3mm in length. The transponder measures 500x500x120 micrometres i.e. 2,000 of these transponders would cover the area of a single postage stamp.
