Why Thalidomide Causes Limb Deformities (IMAGE)

When a drug binding-deficient mutant form of cereblon (CRBN YW/AA) is overexpressed in zebrafish (left) and chick (right) embryos, thalidomide-induced malformations of the fin or the wing are partially rescued. This image relates to an article that appeared in the March 12, 2010, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Ito of the Tokyo Institute of Technology in Tokyo, Japan, and colleagues, was titled, "Identification of a Primary Target of Thalidomide Teratogenicity."
