Like the extinct Mauritian giant tortoises (Cylindraspis species), the ecological replacements, Aldabra giant tortoises (Aldabrachelys gigantean), are adapted to harsh conditions and are able to find water by drinking through their nostrils. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the 25 July, 2014, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Philip J. Seddon at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand, and colleagues was titled, 'Reversing defaunation: Restoring species in a changing world.'
