This is a false color image of zoned orthopyroxene crystals used in forensic-style analysis of Mount St. Helens' 1980 eruption. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the May 25, 2012, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by K. Saunders at University of Bristol in Bristol, UK, and colleagues was titled, "Linking Petrology and Seismology at an Active Volcano."
