A halftone printing method is used to program the growth of a flat sheet into a sphere through a pattern based on the Peirce quincuncial map projection (shown in the background). This image relates to a paper that appeared in the March 9, 2012, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by J. Kim at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass., and colleagues was titled, "Designing Responsive Buckled Surfaces by Halftone Gel Lithography."
