The surface tower at drill site A under construction is shown. Data from ocean instruments deployed 450m through the ice shelf into the ocean cavity below is transmitted from the tower equipment by satellite back to Naval Postgraduate School. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the 13 Sept., 2013, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by T.P. Stanton at Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., and colleagues was titled, "Channelized Ice Melting in the Ocean Boundary Layer Beneath Pine Island Glacier, Antarctica."
