A Form of Cholesterol Allows the Eye to Evade the Immune System (2 of 2) (IMAGE)
Caption
Cholesterol sulfate (CS) grants immune privilege: In the immune-privileged sites such as the eye, CS inhibits the activity of DOCK2, which is essential for migration and activation of immune cells, and thereby protects the tissue from invading immune cells. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the 30 July, issue of Science Signaling, published by AAAS. The paper, by T. Sakurai at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan; and colleagues was titled, "Cholesterol sulfate is a DOCK2 inhibitor that mediates tissue-specific immune evasion in the eye."
