From spatial localization to goal-directed navigation: According to the theory proposed in this article, mammals perform a certain mental rotation to switch from a world-centered neural representation of their current location to a self-centered representation of goal positions. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the Dec. 18, 2015, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by M. Stemmler at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München in Munich, Germany, and colleagues was titled, "Connecting multiple spatial scales to decode the population activity of grid cells."
