The double "claviform" symbol on the famous polychrome ceiling of Altamira Cave, Spain, dates to at least 35,600 years ago, showing that painting took place in the cave at various times over at least 20,000 years. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the June 15, 2012, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Alistair Pike at the University of Bristol in Bristol, UK, and colleagues was titled, "U-Series Dating of Paleolithic Art in 11 Caves in Spain."
