A new mapping tool uses satellite imagery to reveal where mountaintop coal mining is underway in Appalachia, going back more than three decades. This animation illustrates the pace of mountaintop mining across more than 10,000 square miles near Charleston, West Virginia, from 1985 to 2015. Forested areas appear green, whereas mined areas appear yellow.
