This image shows a single Spiroplasma cell from a female Drosophila neotestacea. Spiroplasma is passed on to the next generation through the egg of the fly. This image relates to an article that appeared in the July 9, 2010, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. John Jaenike of the University of Rochester in Rochester, N.Y. and colleagues, is titled, "Adaptation via Symbiosis: Recent Spread of a Drosophila Defensive Symbiont."
