Special cells in the walls of blood vessels multiply in response to spinal cord injury and form the inner part of the persisting scar. The picture shows a four-month-old scar in the spinal cord and blood-vessel-wall-derived cells in green. This image relates to an article that appeared in the July 8, 2011, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Christian Göritz of Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, and colleagues was titled, "A Pericyte Origin of Spinal Cord Scar Tissue."
