Plastic pieces were collected in a surface plankton net tow. Pieces are typically millimeter-sized fragments of once-larger items. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Aug. 19, 2010, issue of Science Express, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Kara Lavender Law of the Sea Education Association in Woods Hole, Mass., and colleagues was titled, "Plastic Accumulation in the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre."
