A Greener Arctic May Jeopardize Caribou Populations (IMAGE)
Caption
Animation of annual sea ice concentration, summer greening on the Arctic tundra and the development of caribou populations from 1982-2011. Herd population fluctuations over time are depicted by growing and shrinking caribou symbols. The results of the study suggest sea ice loss led to greener summer pastures with lower quality vegetation, which may contribute to decreasing caribou populations. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the April 26, 2017, issue of Science Advances, published by AAAS. The paper, by P. Fauchald at Norwegian Institute for Nature Research in Tromsø, Norway, and colleagues was titled, "Arctic greening from warming promotes declines in caribou populations."
