Secrets of Antibiotic Resistance Unlocked (6 of 9) (IMAGE)
Caption
Similar to the mutant lacking the stringent response, colonies from Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates can have a “fried-egg” appearance due to autolysis, and an iridescent sheen due to excessive HAQ molecules. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the Nov. 18, 2011, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Dao Nguyen at McGill University in Montreal, QC, Canada, and colleagues, was titled, “Active Starvation Responses Mediate Antibiotic Tolerance in Biofilms and Nutrient-Limited Bacteria.”
