Starting from hydrogen cyanide, the one-pot synthesis of cyanamide and precursors to simple sugars in water -- using gamma rays in the presence of ammonium and chloride salts -- offers a way forward for engineering complex mixtures that can evolve important, potentially prebiological compounds.
