How the brain decides which speech tone it hears (VIDEO)
Caption
In this video, a statistical model simulates how the human brain decides which of four Mandarin speech tones it is hearing. As the brain gathers information over time, neurons associated with each of the four options (red = high-level, blue = low-rising, green = low-dipping, purple = high-falling) increase their activity until they reach one of four thresholds and the brain makes a decision.
