Here, Beth Shapiro works to remove a frozen horse skull from the permafrost. DNA extracted from this skull will be used in paleogenomic analyses. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the 24 Jan., 2014, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by B. Shapiro at the University of California, Santa Cruz in Santa Cruz, CA, and colleagues was titled, "A Paleogenomic Perspective on Evolution and Gene Function: New Insights from Ancient DNA."
