Colorful New Era of Calcium Imaging (1 of 3) (IMAGE)
Caption
Photo-micrograph of a cultured rat hippocampal neuron expressing the red fluorescent calcium indicator, R-GECO1. The pseudo-color image reflects the various concentrations of calcium ion measured in the neuron and its arbors. The color encoding in calcium levels, from highest to lowest, is white, red, yellow, green, blue and black. The image represents an area 100 micrometers wide. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Sept. 8, 2011, issue of Science Express, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Y. Zhao of University of Alberta in Edmonton, AB, Canada, and colleagues was titled, "An Expanded Palette of Genetically Encoded Ca2+ Indicators."
