Sea Ice See-Saw in the Arctic (6 of 9) (IMAGE)
Caption
This is fast ice at the coast of North Greenland. This type of sea ice is stationary and anchored to land. For most of the year it blocks this northern coast, but is normally swept away by autumn storms and recreated in the early winter. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Aug. 5, 2011, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Svend Funder of the Natural History Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen, Denmark, and colleagues was titled, "A 10,000-Year Record of Arctic Ocean Sea-Ice Variability -- View from the Beach."
