In this image, nearby regions on a chain of DNA are indicated using similar colors. The fractal globule is has a hierarchical organization; regions nearby along the chain are also nearby in 3-D. The fractal globule is extraordinarily dense, but entirely unknotted. This image relates to Dr. Erez Lieberman Aiden's Essay, "Zoom!" This image relates to an article that appeared in the Dec. 2, 2011, issue of Science, published by AAAS on the winner and runners-up of the GE & Science Prize for Young Life Scientists.
