Catchment Geology Rules Freshwater Plant Communities (6 of 14) (IMAGE)
Caption
Streams are naturally high in CO2 and therefore bicarbonate-use is of little advantage. In fact, several species of wetland plants can develop aquatic life stages and most of these are restricted to CO2-use. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the 15 Nov. issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by L.L. Iversen at University of Copenhagen in Copenhagen, Denmark, and colleagues was titled, "Catchment properties and the photosynthetic trait composition of freshwater plant communities."
