The three-dimensional structure of MutL is presented as a ribbon diagram with the metal-binding and endonuclease sites labeled. The electrostatic surface of MutL reveals that the region surrounding the active site (endonuclease site) is predominantly negatively charged. Since DNA is also negatively charged, MutL-DNA binding is impaired by charge repulsion.
