Seeing Earthquake Magnitude (IMAGE) University of Oregon Caption Scientists have found in GPS data a telling window that begins 10 seconds into an earthquake. In four sample events (colored lines), the acceleration of peak ground displacement (measurements shown at right) just five seconds later suggests whether a megaquake, such as a magnitude 9 (red X) or a sub-7 magnitude quake is in progress. Real time monitoring, the researchers say, could enhance earthquake early warning.
