A large group of zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) gathers in the Australian outback. As shown by Goodson et al., flocking behavior in zebra finches is regulated by a neuropeptide system that is better known for its effects on maternal behavior in mammals. This image relates to an article that appeared in the August 14, 2009, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. James Goodson of Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., and colleagues, was titled, "Mesotocin and Nonapeptide Receptors Promote Estrildid Flocking Behavior."
